This August 8, 2025 marks the two-year anniversary of the devastating Maui wildfires. To honor those lost and support survivors, there are numerous remembrance events being held across Maui on August 8th.
1. Paddle Out at Hanaka‘ō‘ō Beach Park
Hanaka‘ō‘ō Beach Park will host a Paddle Out for surfers and paddlers from 7 a.m. to 1:30pm. Spectators may watch from shore. The event will feature messages of hope, prayers, and music. Due to limited parking Hanaka‘ō‘ō Beach Park will have designated equipment drop-off and pick-up areas only. Attendees are asked to park at the Lahaina Civic Center with shuttle service provided to and from the beach.
Schedule of events:
- 7:00am - Shuttles from Lahaina Civic Center begin service
- 9:30am - Program begins
- 10:00am - Paddle out launches
- 11:15am - Return to shore and music by Na Leo Pilimehana
2. Noon Gathering at County Building
Join others at noon for a heartfelt memorial gathering at the County Building in Wailuku to honor those affected by the Lahaina fire. This event will offer a moment of reflection, unity, and support for the community as we remember the lives lost and continue the journey of healing.
3. Kaanapali Beach Moment of Silence
The entire beachfront strip of resorts along Kaanapali Beach will be hosting a moment of silence and flower release. All residents and visitors are invited to gather in unity and remembrance.
Schedule of events:
- 3:30 pm: Gather beachfront for the distribution of flowers
- 3:45 pm: A conch shell will blow to initiate the Moment of Silence
- 3:47 pm: A second conch shell will blow, ending the Moment of Silence. Attendees are then invited to release flowers into the ocean.
