Whales are here in Maui

Whale

Breaching Whale

Did you know that Lahaina was once the royal capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom before it was moved to Honolulu in 1845? At that time is was also the center of whaling in Hawaii (1825 to 1860). During that time, Lahaina was known as the Pacific’s most significant whaling port. At its peak, whalers were hunting thousands of whales each year—to the point of near extinction. Today, conservation has helped to save whales and increase the overall whale population – and Maui is the best place to see them.

It is whale season now (until around April) so this is a great time to visit Maui and experience the amazement of the majestic North Pacific Humpback Whales. There are many reasons Humpback Whales spend the summer in Maui. They come to breed and give birth but they also put on a great show. If you want to see these amazing creatures up-close then treat yourself to scenic ocean views as expert guides take you to the best spots to observe whales playfully surfacing, tail slapping, or blowing spouts in the air. But remember – regulations prohibit boats from approaching within 100 yards of a whale and you should never swim with or touch whales or any other marine mammals.

A great way to find a whale watching tour is to visit Lahaina Harbor. A short drive from Kaanapali Alii you will find whale watching kiosks lining the harbor with a variety of whale watching options. There you will find a wide range of whale watching tours from charter boats to passenger rafts. Tours last roughly 2-4 hours long and some even offer early bird specials.

To explore more of Lahaina’s whaling past, the harbor offers many opportunities  (delete “there”) as well. Echoes of the past can be found from the modest Lahaina Lighthouse (the oldest lighthouse in the Pacific) to Hale Paahao, the Old Lahaina Prison, where rowdy sailors were rounded up for the night in the 1850’s. A short stroll from Kaanapali Alii is Whaler’s Village with an extensive Whaling Museum that is free to the public.

These are just a few of the reasons to give yourself time to explore the fascinating town of Lahaina. And there’s no better place to stay than Kaanapali Alii where all the adventures of Lahaina Town are just a stone’s throw away!

Paradise in Paradise!  This is, by far, the best place to stay in Maui!!!!  Our unit was on the corner with a panoramic view.  The owner spared no expense with all the upgrades from the green marble counter tops, electric blinds, bamboo four poster bed to the high end appliances and seductive lighting that reflected off the marble floors and built in to the coffered ceiling.  This unit is very sexy!  I would imagine all units have this similar atmosphere.  I can tell you that when you walk along the shore, amongst all the other resorts, the Kaanapali Alii is where you want to be.  Immaculate, heavenly grounds, simple yet elegant pool, wonderful area for grilling and fabulous staff.  Stay here if you can.  You won’t want to leave!!!

“Magical”

I have stayed here 3 times over the last 3 years and this is one of my favorite places in the world.  When ever I think of my “happy place” this is it.  The location is spectacular right next to the beach.  The grounds here are beautiful and the pool area is amazing.  We usually bbq every night and watch the sunset with a bottle of wine from the bbq area and then go for a stroll down to whalers village for frozen yogurt.  On tues and thurs mornings you can do yoga on the grass over looking the beach.  I love waking up early and going for an early morning run on the beach down to black rock and then down to the other end of the beach, it’s a great way to start the day.  There is always fresh coffee waiting for you down by the pool every morning..if your too lazy to make it in your room 🙂  The buffet at the westin is one of the best.  Those looking to do spinning classes..the westin has a great early morning spin class on the balcony over looking the ocean.  The staff here are all super firendly and are always willing to help you.

Can’t say enough great things about the Alii and can’t wait to go back every year.

As you know, from time-to-time we share comments from our Guest Survey Questionnaire.

Visitor Donna, who said with us this past September, commented:

My sisters and I were celebrating our birthdays and our mother (who passed away 6 years ago).  Our stay was wonderful.  Our room was well equipped for 4 women.  From the sounds of the ocean (all day) to our drive on the island was great.  We have already been talking about returning to Kaanapali Beach Resort in the near future.  We definitely needed more time to finish doing the things we wanted to do like horseback riding, zipline, the lavender fields and shopping on Front Street.  We were able to attend a Luau, Pacific Whale Foundation sunset dinner cruise, Aquarium and Snuba in Turtle Island.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to congratulate you all on a beautiful stay at the Kaanapali Alii

Until we meet again,
Donna

“Perfect In Every Way…”

The most dramatic part of any vacation is the anticipation you feel as you insert the keycard into the lock of a hotel room that you are entering for the first time – – especially after you’ve spent 12 hours of flying time with 3 young children to get to your destination.

So you can imagine the excitement we felt when we opened the door to enter one of the
most gorgeous hotel/condo units we’ve ever seen.  We had reserved a 2BR, recently renovated suite facing the ocean and that’s exactly what we got.  The unit was immaculate – – clean, spacious, nicely decorated…. it was actually a luxury condo rather than a hotel room.  The beds were extremely comfortable (even the sleeper sofa was nice – – usually hotel sleeper sofas are not so nice when you unfold them), the kitchen was modern and fully equipped, the bathrooms were pristine, and the condition of the overall unit was excellent.  The highlight of our accommodation was that our 3rd floor lanai was literally 30 yards from one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen.  Great for swimming and people watching as you had surfers dealing with some challenging waves while mostly newlyweds strolled the walkway extending the entire length of Kaanapali Beach ending at Whaler’s Village on the north end – – a very nice shopping plaza (we saw an excellent and free hula show there).  As for the kids, they didn’t even miss the lack of a pool slide that a few other nearby hotels had – – dancing in the waves and attempting to body surf in the ocean right in front of the hotel was more than enough entertainment for them (and us parents as well).

So when you add it all up – – central location on a beautiful stretch of beach, pleasant staff, immaculate and spacious suites, wonderful views, great amenities – – it’s one of the best places you could stay at without sacrificing a bar of gold for the experience.  Bravo Kaanapali Alii !!!

“We love this place!”

Our family of five stayed here and absolutely fell in love with it.  We had a beautiful 2 bedroom (more like a 3 bedroom) unit overlooking the ocean and pool.  The staff could not have been nicer.  The pool area is not huge but it is very cozy and much more quiet than the pools at the resorts on the beach.  Speaking of the beach, the Alii has THE best beachfront in Kaanapali.  There are 8 state of the art grills overlooking the ocean for people who want to hang out on the terrace and eat steaks while they watch the sunset.  The charmingly busy oceanfront town of Lahaina is just a 10 minute drive away and it offers plenty of shopping, ice cream, people watching and food options.  At night many of the restaurants have live music which a nice added touch.  All in all, we had an amazing time, with no complaints, only great memories.  We would love to return someday!!

“Paradise Found”

We planned a family trip to Maui to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary (3 years early!).  We thought it would be a trip of a lifetime and it was, but we are already thinking about when we can return.  We chose the Kaanapali Alii since two 2-bdrm, 2 bath condos met our family’s needs.  It was fabulous!  The rooms were well decorated and very beautiful.  The mountain view was breathtaking especially when the beautiful rainbow appeared in our window, without any rain!  We loved the gorgeous beaches and pools.  One of the highlights of our trip was grilling out on the grills provided by the Alii.  We have told our friends about this beautiful place.  We would choose the Alii again.

“Perfect for Families”

We stayed here with our 2 kids (ages 2 1/2 and 6 mos) for 10 days.  The condo was fabulous – 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a full, equiped kitchen.  Sits directly in between the Westin and Marriot on Kaanapali Beach.  Bring a stroller for little ones, and you can walk everywhere.  The pools are perfect, and there is even a kiddie pool that’s 18 inches deep.  My brother and his family stayed at the Westin (which is also superb if you want a regular hotel room) and his kids liked our pool better (ages 2 1/2 and 1 yr).  The outside barbeque area is wonderful, beach front and equipped (paper plates, utensiles, napkins, etc) so you just bring your food and drinks down and grill practically right on the beach.
