Hanakaoo Beach – A More Relaxed Beach for the Day

Kaanapali Beach is famous: The long, white sandy beach runs along the strikingly blue ocean, and a fun boardwalk where there are countless shops and restaurants to enjoy. People travel from all over the world to visit the landmark beach. But, if you’re looking for a less busy beach, where you’ll find locals instead of tourists, then you need to head to Hanakaoo Beach. This beach is more relaxed, and will offer you a glimpse of Hawaiian life.

Hanakaoo Beach

Hanakaoo Beach (also referred to as Canoe Beach), is a place where outrigger canoes often launch (hence, the nickname). It is located just a little south past the more popular Kaanapali Beach.  The beach offers great swimming for the entire family, and also has other great amenties, such as BBQ’s, showers and bathrooms, covered tables, and plenty of parking. And, if you have young children, this beach is a great choice, as it is one of only seven in Maui with lifeguards. The visibility for snorkeling can often be low, but some visitors have said they were able to see plenty of wildlife, including sea turtles. Additionally, be sure to see the ancient grinding stones: These basalt boulders are located by the lifeguard stand. They were used to shape stone tools in ancient times. A small plaque nearby explains more about the grinding stones.

Hanakaoo Beach is a wonderful beach where your whole family can relax. And, it is usually much less crowded and busy than the more popular Kaanapali Beach. Here, you can set up your umbrella, pack a lunch, and plan on spending the entire day relaxing in peace as you sit and listen to the waves.
