Experience Renewal with the Cleansing Hi’uwai On New Years Day

Another year has almost passed. As we begin a new chapter of our lives, it is good to step back and reflect on the events that have occurred, as well as prepare for the coming year and whatever it holds. One of the best things to do to start a new year is to travel to a new place: Hawaii is the perfect setting to watch the old year become the new. Every year, we hold a special cleansing ritual to begin the year anew. It is called Hi’uwai. Today, we’ll look at exactly what this ritual signifies.

What is Hi’uwai?

In ancient Hawaii, the annual bath between midnight and sunrise was regarded as a ceremony of purification, symbolizing a cleansing of the misdeeds and impurities from the past. The definition from the Hawaiian Dictionary says:

“In the old days, the bath between midnight and morning was regarded as a ceremony of purification. It was a sign that the bather wished to be cleansed of all (ceremonial uncleanness of the past year. Since salt water was regarded as the water of purification, everyone who could went to the sea to bathe.”

The act of wading into the tranquil water, and mentally releasing all the stress, worries, anxiety, and woes of our lives can be extremely freeing. Entering the new year with a clear head allows you to focus on the events and plans that next year holds.
