First Light – E ala e!
We invite you to join us in experiencing the First Light of the New Year in a Hawaiian Sea-water Cleansing, also known as Hi’uwai.
Hi’uwai means to cleanse in sea water. In ancient Hawaii, the bath between midnight and morning was regarded as a ceremony of purification. It was a symbol of cleansing all impurities of the past year. Since salt water was regarded as the water of purification, everyone who could – went to the sea to bathe. The ritual of purification involves wading silently into the tranquil sea while releasing problems, stress or grief.
Take this opportunity to participate in this hi’uwai to promote inner and spiritual peace in oneself and create a new wellness. Awaken your senses and rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit.
When: Saturday, January 1, 2012
Where: On the beach in front of Kaanapali Alii
Time: 6:30am – Hi’uwai will begin promptly.
What to bring:
- Bathing suit and towel
- Warm clothing
- Open mind and heart
E ala e!
E ala e, ka la i ka hikina
I ka moana, ka moana hohonu
Pi`i i ka lewa, ka lewa nu`u
I ka hikina, aia a ka la, e ala e!
Rise up the sun is in the east
In the ocean, the deep ocean
Climbs to the heavens, the great height of the heavens
In the east, there is the sun, rise up!

I have stayed here 3 times over the last 3 years and this is one of my favorite places in the world. When ever I think of my “happy place” this is it. The location is spectacular right next to the beach. The grounds here are beautiful and the pool area is amazing. We usually bbq every night and watch the sunset with a bottle of wine from the bbq area and then go for a stroll down to whalers village for frozen yogurt. On tues and thurs mornings you can do yoga on the grass over looking the beach. I love waking up early and going for an early morning run on the beach down to black rock and then down to the other end of the beach, it’s a great way to start the day. There is always fresh coffee waiting for you down by the pool every morning..if your too lazy to make it in your room 🙂 The buffet at the westin is one of the best. Those looking to do spinning classes..the westin has a great early morning spin class on the balcony over looking the ocean. The staff here are all super firendly and are always willing to help you.
Can’t say enough great things about the Alii and can’t wait to go back every year.
As you know, from time-to-time we share comments from our Guest Survey Questionnaire.
Visitor Donna, who said with us this past September, commented:
My sisters and I were celebrating our birthdays and our mother (who passed away 6 years ago). Our stay was wonderful. Our room was well equipped for 4 women. From the sounds of the ocean (all day) to our drive on the island was great. We have already been talking about returning to Kaanapali Beach Resort in the near future. We definitely needed more time to finish doing the things we wanted to do like horseback riding, zipline, the lavender fields and shopping on Front Street. We were able to attend a Luau, Pacific Whale Foundation sunset dinner cruise, Aquarium and Snuba in Turtle Island.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to congratulate you all on a beautiful stay at the Kaanapali Alii
Until we meet again,
