Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS revolutionized musical theater when it opened in London in 1981 and then in the United States in 1982. This year Maui OnStage brings CATS to the historic Iao Theater!
Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, and with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS won seven 1983 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting and Best Costumes.
Maui OnStage’s production of CATS is directed and choreographed by Alexander Cardinalli who performed for the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina’s production of CATS as the assistant choreographer and the roles of Coricopat, Rumpus cat, and Gehngis cat. Cardinalli was also the on stage cover/understudy for Mr. Mistoffelees, Alonzo, and Mungojerrie. “The training for this show is the most difficult and rewarding aspect for all of us. Maui OnStage’s strong, local cast is performing choreography and music from the Tokyo, Berlin, Zurich, Broadway, National Tour, and Hollywood versions of this legendary musical.” (Cardinalli) Rounding out this talented team is musical director Kirsten D.F. Otterson. Kirsten is a choral and music teacher at Baldwin High School and has a long history of singing, performing and teaching on Maui.
CATS runs March 11 – 27, 2011 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. at the historic Iao Theater in downtown Wailuku. Tickets for CATS range from $15 – $20 and are on sale now online at mauionstage.com. You may also contact Maui OnStage’s Box Office at 808-242-6969.
Visitor from Hawaii – January 2011
“This place was perfect again… we had a terrific stay. It gets better each time.”
We have been here several times over the years but the upgrades to the property with new pools and fitness center are great. The staff went out of there way to make it a great stay. We have tried other places on the island but they never compared to coming back to the Alii.

We have all heard the saying “Locally grown food tastes better” and here on Maui this is no exception. Maui has been experiencing a re-invigoration of an agricultural lifestyle through the establishment of a sustainable ranching industry. Because of this, Maui beef is among the best beef in the United States. Our travel tip is to try Maui beef from the Maui Cattle Company on your next visit.
Enjoy meat that is free of artificial ingredients, growth stimulants, and antibiotics. Island-grazed beef and grass-fed lamb raised in a stress-free environment provide more health benefits and are leaner than commercially-raised products. You won’t find Maui Cattle Company beef at Costco or Safeway but you will find it at Lahaina Farms, Foodland and Long’s Drug Store, just to name a few. It is also served in various restaurants throughout Maui. Click here for a list of locations where you can find Maui beef. Sometimes determining the best preparation for a cut of meat can be tricky but thanks to Maui Cattle Company’s “Beef Made Easy”, we now know not only the various ways to prepare different cuts of Chuck but also where it comes from. Click here to view this helpful chart. We really enjoy the lean, tender and flavorful meats from Maui Cattle Company and hope you will too!
