Enjoy A Lava Flow In Your Condo

One of the most popular tropical drinks on the islands is the Lava Flow.  Just by looking at the ingredients it’s not hard to see why.  If you like Pina Coladas, you may enjoy the twist of the addition of strawberries.  Try this recipe we found on Hawaiianrecipes.org in the luxury of your Kaanapali Alii condo that comes with a fully equipped ktichen and enjoy on your private lanai.  Should you decide to quench your thirst poolside be sure to serve in plastic cups.  Enjoy!

  • 1 oz. Light rum
  • 1 oz. Malibu® coconut rum
  • 2 oz. Fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 1 Small banana
  • 2 oz. Unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 2 oz. Coconut cream

Blend the 2 rums and the strawberries in a blender to form a smooth paste.  Pour this mixture into a tall (Collins or Hurricane) glass.  Rinse the blender.  Blend the banana, the coconut cream, and the pineapple juice in blender with crushed ice until smooth.  Pour this mixture into the glass with the rums very slowly and watch as the strawberry mixture oozes its way to the top along the sides of the glass creating the flowing lava effect.  Garnish with a pineapple wedge and paper umbrella.

We also want to mention that the Lava Flow can be made without alcohol by omitting the rum ingredients.

“Loved the Alii”

My husband and I just got back from a 12 day stay at the Kaanapali Alii and we loved every minute of it!  Beautiful location and accommodations.  You have all the comforts of home in their spacious condos.  All staff members were extremely courteous and helpful.  It is a 2 minute walk to Whaler’s Village, which has lots of great shops and restaurants.  This was our second stay at the Alii, and we would love to make this a once a year destination.  Really couldn’t ask for a better vacation.

Traveler’s tip
Snorkeling is a must!  It’s a short walk to Black Rock, and it is teeming with sea life.  Also, head north on Hwy 30 for a few miles and make a left on Kai Ala, you will find a beach with an amazing reef that stretches the entire length of the shoreline.  We took a snorkeling cruise to Molokini Crater & Turtle Arches with Eco Tours and it was the highlight of the trip.  We highly recommend reserving a cabana on the beach in front of the Alii.

“Trip of a lifetime”

I came out to Maui with 5 of my best girlfriends expecting to have a great time, but my expectations were exceeded.  I’ve stayed at the Kaanapali Alii many times before with my family and always experienced great service with a very friendly staff.  I was stunned when we walked into our unit (Unit 364).  It had been newly renovated and the family photos around the condo gave it a special, personal touch.  The location couldn’t be any better being on one of the best beaches in the world and a short shuttle ride to Lahaina.  While Lahaina is always a fun time, we loved our daily happy hours at Hula Grill sticking our feet in the sand at the barefoot bar.  We rented surfboards practically every day and had such a blast playing around in the waves right in front of our condo where the surf broke perfectly.  All in all – great condo, great weather, and great friends!  Will definitely request this unit next time!

Travel Tip From Your Your Friends at Kaanapali Alii

We are smart phone fans and since you may be too we thought we would share this article we found on Time.com “Top Apps To Travel With This Holiday Season” by Michelle Castillo.  We have been well aware of how helpful FlightTracker is but we never knew about AsApp from WhereTraveler.com which finds airport security wait times across the country.  We also really like the Apps to help keep the kids entertained.  Click here to read the full article.

Auntie Sheri’s Fresh Cranberry & Orange Bread Courtesy of Lahaina Grill

Our friends at Lahaina Grill have a perfect treat to bake and share this season.  Auntie Sheri’s Fresh Cranberry and Orange Bread. Enjoy!

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 1 1/2 large oranges)
  • 1 cup golden raisins (sultanas)
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (about 6 ounces), whole

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch baking pan.  NOTE: Recipe will also make 3 mini loaf pans (1 pound loaf).  Start by sifting the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda into a large mixing bowl.  Using your fingers, combine the butter into the flour mixture until it is crumbly.  Add the egg, orange zest and orange juice, all at once; stir with a wooden spoon just until the mixture is combined.  Fold in the raisins and cranberries.  Spoon the batter into the prepared pan or pans.  Bake the large loaf for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.  If you are baking the mini loaves, bake for approximately 40 minutes.  Remove from oven and place on a wire rack.  After 5 minutes, remove the breads from the pans and cool completely.

Lahaina Grill’s  holiday serving suggestions:

  • Toast and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
  • Enjoy at breakfast with a nice hot cappuccino.
  • Add 1 cup of your favorite nuts to the recipe. We tried with the addition of whole macadamia nuts and it was terrific. Pecans and walnuts also make for a nice alternative.

Start Your New Year at E ala E!

In ancient Hawaii, the bath in the ocean between midnight and morning was regarded as a ceremony of purification.  It was a symbol of cleansing all impurities of the past year.  Since salt water was regarded as the water of purification, everyone who could went to the sea to bathe.  The ritual of purification involves wading silently into the tranquil sea while releasing problems, stress or grief to restore inner-peace and balance for the new year.

On January 1st, 2010 in the wee hours of the morning with a full moon to the west, Kaanapali Alii guests, owners, and friends gathered on the beach front to experience this native Hawaiian sea-water cleansing known as Hi’uwai.

We invite you to join us for the Second Annual E ala E! January 1, 2011 at 6:30 a.m. to experience this truly exhilarating and rejuvenating event, E ala e! Which means to awaken.

The Alii is my favorite place to stay in Maui!!!!!!  These condos are HUGE!!!!  Like honestly-HUGE!  The two bedroom units can easily sleep 6…if not 8!
The pool, jacuzzi and BBQ area just got remodeled…WOW!!!!  It is soooo unbelievably nice!  They also just renovated their work-out facility as well.  Its huge now!
The staff is great and they have beach chairs you can take out during the day.  My friends and family all stayed here for my wedding in May 2009…and it was the best time ever!  There was about 40 of us there…not ONE COMPLAINT!  🙂  Cannot wait to go back!!!!

Famous Dave’s Now Open In Lahaina

Just opened on Front Street, in the heart of Lahaina Town, Famous Dave’s brings barbecue to Lahaina’s oceanfront.  This is the first Hawaii location for the chain restaurant and we stopped by on opening night to try out their award winning St. Louis-style Ribs.

True to the Famous Dave’s brand, the ambiance is fun, lively and definitely family friendly.  The first thing we noticed were the barbecue sauces.  Six bottles of various barbecue sauces ranging from sweet to fire hot are located on each table with a handy roll of paper towels giving us a hint of what was to come.

For starters we tried the Rib Tips ($10.49) which came highly recommended by our server. The hickory-smoked tips are tender bits of meat served on a bed of fries and did not disappoint.

Next we tried the Pineapple Rage Chicken Wings ($11.99 for 12 pieces).  Grilled pineapple blended in a sauce with habanero peppers makes this hot-sweet a tasty combination,  perfect for our tropical locale.  Appetizers range in price from $6.99 to $18.49.

For our entree we tried the XXL Ribs, “The Big Slab” ($27.99).  12-bones, hand-rubbed with Dave’s secret blend of special spices and pit-smoked for 3-4 hours over a sweet hickory fire then slathered in sauce and caramelized over an open flame.  The ribs are really fallin’-off-the-bone tender.  Served with a corn bread muffin, corn-on-the-cob, and your choice of two sides.   Entrees range from $9.49 to $75.99.

The best part about the menu is that it’s not limited to ribs.  You will also find Burgers Sandwiches and even four 600 calorie or less entrees. All-in-all we enjoyed Famous Dave’s and hope you will too!

Open 11am – 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11am – 11pm Friday and Saturday.  Located at 736 Front Street in Lahaina.  They can be reached at 808-661-1125.
