Visitor from Phoenix, AZ – March 2010
Alaska Airlines has announced it will begin daily direct service to Maui from Sacramento starting on Friday, March 26, 2010.
Over the past two years, the Seattle-based carrier has scheduled 12 routes to four Hawaiian Islands from cities on the West Coast. And it plans a second daily Seattle-Maui flight beginning in June.
The newest daily flight from Sacramento to Kahului will depart at 8:15 a.m. local time in California and arrive in Maui at 10:50 a.m. Hawaii time. A return flight will leave Maui at 11:15 a.m. and land in Sacramento at 8 p.m.
Alaska Airlines President Brad Tilden will attend a celebration Friday for the first flight leaving Sacramento. A Hawaiian band and dancers, along with a priestess who will perform a blessing ceremony, will be part of the celebration.

“Perfect place for us”
Visitor from Kansas City
We had 3 adults on our trip and did not want the standard hotel room with 2 double or queen size beds even if it would have been a five star hotel. I searched the web all over looking for just the right place for our stay and Kaanapali Alii was the perfect place for us. While the “girls” shared the main bedroom, the “male” had his own bedroom and bathroom just off the living room so he could fall asleep with the TV like he prefers. The girls could shut the door on their part of the condo for privacy. It would be great for a couple with kids or 2 couples also. We loved the up-to-date kitchen and being on the first floor the easy access to the pool and beach. Our room was a garden view but we actually ended up being able to see some ocean from our room. We used the outdoor grill and ate out on our patio. It was wonderful. I found the Alii reasonably priced when comparing to other hotels with the same star rating and was please with all of the space we had. The steps in the middle of the unit might make it difficult if someone is elderly or handicapped but we did not ask for a handicapped room so they may have that available. The Alii gave us guest vouchers to park at other hotels which was nice since there was no restaurant on site but who cares when Lahaina is only a short drive away and you have a great kitchen at the Alii. I can’t think of staying anywhere else the next time we come to Maui. Will have to get the cabana again-that was the best day in Maui!
This recipe adapts traditional Indian tandoori cooking for a barbecue. The chicken needs to marinate overnight, so start this one day ahead.
2 cups plain whole-milk yogurt
3 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
3 Tbsp. fresh ginger, peeled, minced
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. ground coriander
1 1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1 tsp. ground cumin
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
8 skinless chicken leg-thigh pieces
3 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 small red onion, thinly sliced crosswise, separated into rings
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
Blend 1 cup yogurt and the next 9 ingredients listed above in a processor until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl. Mix in remaining 1 cup of yogurt. Add chicken and mix to thoroughly coat chicken with marinade. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Prepare barbecue (medium-high heat). Clean the grates well and oil them. Mix chicken to ensure it is coated well with marinade. Place marinated chicken on barbecue. Grill chicken until just cooked through, about 12 minutes per side. During the last 2 minutes of cooking, occasionally baste chicken with butter. Transfer chicken to platter. Top with onion and cilantro and serve.
